Cold comfort

My Husband rarely makes a special request of the kitchen. But this past week he hoped for chili. It was bitter cold and he is a child of the west.

What is your blistery winter evening comfort food?

My husband asks for chili when it is miserably cold outside too

Our winter favorite for cold and blustery nights is a hearty beef stew made with carrots and other root vegetables, served over mashed potatoes. Chili is, however, a perennial favorite this time of year as well, along with thick split pea soup made with plenty of best-quality ham and vegetables.

Chili! After Christmas I always make a huge pot of it then can it so we can have it whenever the mood strikes. I love cold nights by the fire with a big bowl of chili!

Always good. My comfort food is spoon bread or my mother's potato soup. They evoke childhood memories I treasure- oh and toast made in the frying pan, and I could go on and on-

Nothing beats a hot bowl of chili on a frigid winter night. It makes the regular rounds on the dinner menu at our home during the cold months.

Chili, both red and white versions, are definitely cold-day meals for us. A good pot roast with potatoes is another one.

I would always go for dried-pea soup made of course with celeriac with a hunk of smoked sausage sliced into it.

Braised soy sauce beef. Grass-fed stew beef, soy sauce, sugar, rice wine, water, star anise, cook forever over very low heat....yum.

I just found a new favorite cold weather drink, Jack the Ripper. Hot chocolate with whisky. I'll never drink plain hot chocolate again!

All those mentioned above are on menu rotation during the cold months. Seasoned black beans and yellow rice is another good dish for a chilly night as is shrimp and grits.

I love a good stew on a cold blustery night. We dont see too many here in Southern Cali, but when we do I break out my dutch oven and get to braising.

Oh, and PIZZA!

Thanks doll,

Oh that looks so good! I love chili from the fall through the winter, all versions, but white chili with chicken is my favorite.

Pot roast simmer all day served with garlic mashed potatoes. Just the smell makes you warm.

Here in our neck of the woods, it is Brunswick Stew - a huge cast iron pot of it.

Kathy Gunst's lobster stew with homemade cornbread, or a corn & clam chowder. Ina Garten's homemade mac & cheese (with pecorino) is delice as well. The pecorino adds a warm nutty aftertaste in your mouth.
